July 4th, How Do We Party?

July 4th, How Do We Party?

Our friends are having a BBQ Potluck, yippy!

Wait!  What will we do?

We’ll be surrounded!

Before we decided to do this whole big healthy eating kick, Joe and I already talked about this. We hoped our friends would still invite us over and not be scared or worried about hosting us. We certainly do not expect or want people to go out of their way to accommodate our needs. Although, we do have very nice, thoughtful friends, lucky us!

We had decided that when invited to social events where food was a main thing, we would just bring a few dishes we could eat, and not have any expectations of anything else. We’ll probably also try to eat a huge serving of veggies beforehand, so that we’re not trying to shovel it into our mouths while also visiting with friends.

Recipe from FatFreeVegan.com, click the photo to check it out!

Anyway, tonight is our first night “out” as non-meat, non-dairy, low-sugar, low-salt, low-fat eating people. I’m marinating some huge portobello mushrooms to grill, and making a red-white-and-blue jello salad (yes, I know that gelatin is not vegan, but neither are we, though our diet right now is closely vegan).

I am much better set up for success when I’m busting at the seams from eating an enormous amount of veggies and fruit. We’ll probably eat a 1lb green salad before we go, too.

I’m a little worried about walking past the brownies, cookies, salty potato chips, and creamy potato salad. But we can do this! Yes! We can! Headache free, heartburn free, and full of energy!

I’m so glad you and your kids came to our party! I would have never guessed you had a little internal turmoil about the apple pie because you seemed so content and in control! Thinking back, I guess I did announce that the pie “hit the spot” and “was SOOOO good”. I’m sorry. :) I it was my first party with a veggie-eater. I’ll behave next time. Em and Joe: we admire your new adventure and cheer you on!!!

It did smell oh-so-good. I’m not gonna lie. But, we were surprised by how yummy our huge portobello mushroom caps (marinated, of course) were. Grilled on the same grill as the meat. I was skeptical. They were good! AND–I felt good, I felt full of pep, not grouchy and annoyed at my kids, not sluggish in the heat, and no headache either.

But the apple pie? The homemade apple pie? That was a toughie to pass up. It was gorgeous, and everyone groaned about it. :)

I ate a LOT of fruit. I’ll post that photo later.

I wouldn’t think the brownies would be as tempting as steaks or burgers. The smell of a grilled steak….mmmm….

There were no brownies. Instead my friend made AWESOME homemade apple pie. But I resisted! HOORAY! It was a fun party, Roo said to the hostess, “Thank you for having the best party ever!”

Yay! Good luck. Who needs brownies anyhow?
