So, Kory asked a great question: Are our kids on the same eating plan?
Yes!
Yes.
And no.
Basically they will eat the way we eat as long as they’re in our care (at home, traveling, picnic-ing, etc.). However, we will continue to buy them cow’s milk. Also, when at a friend’s house, or a neighborhood potluck, we are not going to be hoovering over them to make sure they eat according to our diet guidelines. If all the kids are eating a popsicle, our kids will be right along with them with sticky hands and stained shirts.
My hope is that while they are young (5 & 2) this lifestyle change will help form their appetites to be healthy ones, and maybe they’ll have less of an appetite for that other less-nutritious stuff. But being all uptight and stressed out about social eating on behalf of my kids just sounds like an unhappy way to live, and also not significantly important. They get most of their nutrition from home, so they’ll have a good foundation.
I will not prepare different meals for our kids. They will have the same dinner that we have. We eat together, at the table. I will, however, be striving to offer a lot of choices at meal times. Lots of kinds of veggies and fruits, whole grains (whole rice, whole wheat pita and breads), legumes (beans, beans, beans–and they love beans!), nuts, beans n’rice, fruits fruits fruits, cooked and raw veggies…So far it has worked out superbly.
And this leads me to my next post: The First Day Vegetable Carnival Family FEAST!
You’re excited, aren’t you?

Erin, it is so funny, they loved it. Roo keeps on bring it up in random conversation, like, “But that’s okay mommy, because we are so strong, we can do it, because we had a FEAST!”
[...] is the time for us to make this kind of change. Roo is 5, and JoMax is 2, and they don’t know that Doritos are called Doritos, and they don’t know that after they go to bed we usually have a milkshake with chocolate [...]
They look happy!
