Breakfast and Snack on a Typical Day

Breakfast:

First thing I do when I wake up is eat some fresh fruit. Well, not first thing, but close to it.

Usually a banana. It is so easy and convenient!

This isn’t all I eat, it just gets me going right away so that I can get dressed and feed the kids, and then get back to feeding myself more breakfast. I guess it might be akin to a person’s morning cup of coffee.

Today I got up before anyone else and made a fruit smoothie. It was awesome. Everything is awesome on the No Fun diet. I joke, but really it was very very good, and if at the end of six weeks we don’t end up sticking to this diet full-time, I will keep the fruit smoothie in the morning routine.

Anyway–I brought a smoothie to Joe-in-bed. Joe-in-bed is very cute, you should get one. He said, “Why are you so happy today?”

I think it is just because I feel so good!

Lately I’ve been walking with a friend (yay!) and I grab a banana and apple on my way out the door in the morning (we walk early). I eat the banana and start the apple, & drink the water as I drive the short distance to her house. We go for a brisk 30-40 min. walk, and then I finish my apple & water on my drive home.

When I get home I make myself a fruit smoothie. 1/2 cup almond milk (unsweetened, vanilla flavor) plus any fruit I want. Often I use frozen strawberries (unsweetened), a banana, and whatever else is around. Today I added mango and blackberries. It feels like it is such an indulgence. Truly.

Who am I kidding though? Joe makes the fruit smoothies (most of the time). I love him. It is really nice to have a Joe around if you’re trying to eat this way. He is so handsome, strong, and his fruit smoothies are gourmet and fresh. Dreamy.

Some mornings I also have a 1/2 cup or so of whole grains, like steel-cut oats (oatmeal, unsweetened, unsalted, though you could add fresh fruit). But usually just the fruit really satisfies me. This was a big surprise to me. I thought that just fruit in the morning was ridiculous before I tried eating this way. Now I love it! It is one of my favorite things about eating this way.

Pajamas!

I Snack All Morning Long Until Lunch:

Snacky snacky snacky.

I snack on baby carrots and sugar snap peas all morning long. Sometimes I add some cucumber into the mix. You know, easy snacking veggies. Crunchy, refreshing veggies. All. morning. long.

I leave them out on the counter, and the kids snack on them too. When Roo had swimming lessons in the morning, I took them in my bag and little Joey would eat them all during Roo’s swimming lesson. It kept him occupied. That kept me sane.

This works for me. I find myself chewing on stuff like gum, pen caps (if I’m writing), etc. I sound like I’m a dog, I like to chew. I’ve heard it called an “oral fixation”. Oh well. So snacking on these crisp veggies in the morning is a great solution for my wanting to have something in my mouth. I still chew the occasional sugar-free peice of gum, though I’d like not to–I’m not a big fan of artificial sweeteners.

So in the morning I eat fruit (or I drink it in smoothie form, so that I still get all that good fiber), lots and lots of fruit. Then I snack on crunchy veggies all morning long until lunch time. And I am feeling great!

This isn’t hard to do. So if you want to give it a try, just buy some convenience fruits and veggies and go for it!

    Hi Jess,
We’re curious about the grocery bills too. I think we’ll have a better picture at the end of the month when we can compare this month’s grocery budget with previous months. It’s hard to say, because there are a lot of foods we are no longer buying. But produce can be pricey, depending on how you buy it, where you buy it, if it’s in season, etc.

P.S. this is Emily, not Joe :) I’m logged in as Joe though.

So I’m curious how this experiment is affecting your grocery bills. Are they going up or down with all of this extra produce?

My dad would instantly become a fan of your diet because it involves steel cut oats.

If steel cut oats were a religon, my dad would be its Pope.

Yay Robin! You’re back! Did you read my “Inspiriation” post about you? :) I’m so glad you’re here now!

Lisa, thank you! I am feeling good, and right now I’m going to have a fruit smoothie. I would love to come see you next time we’re in town (maybe August).

Crystal, crushed ice? Do you crush it in a Vitamix or something to make it extra snow-cone like? I might try this on a very hot day.

Thanks for reading my blog! :)

Ok. So i just spent lots of time reading all your posts and, YAY! This is so cool. I am proud of the progress you have made and impressed by your super cool blog. You make it all seem easy and very doable. And cool. You are cool. Pretty much the coolest in our family (not including our kids, of course).

So I need to read your blog everyday. And I am going to start posting on my blo now that I am finally home again.

You are going to be famous!

our favorite non-indulgent snack is crushed ice. If you put a few drops of diet soda on it is is almost like a snow cone. It should work well with your chewing addiction as well.

Hey Em! It’s so fun to hear about your quest to simplify and purify your intake. I love hearing that you feel great and can’t wait to hear more about what that means. It’s an aspect of healthy eating that can get lost in the weight loss shuffle. Good work!
